Phil started out with Burnley despite being born in Blackburn, making 18 appearances for the Clarets whom he joined as a trainee. He was sent out on loan to Leek, Telford (where he did very well) and Kettering between 1996 and 1999 before making the move to the sea to join Morecambe where he went on to net 21 goals in 78 appearances over 2 years. The hit man stayed at the seaside, when Southport bought the striker for an undisclosed fee in October 2001. He picked up an injury which kept him out of the start of the season, but produced two outstanding goals in 14 games, before being released to join Celtic. His first season at Celtic saw him bag the golden boot and supporters player of the year with an impressive 30 goals.

Phil picked up the golden boot for his second season running in 2003/04, with another 21 goals, despite spending many weeks injured. 04/05 saw more injuries and loans, despite which he still made several appearances through the season, and bagged another five goals. 05/06 saw him free from injury, but relegated to a mainly bench role, a role he made his own, and scored seven goals coming off the bench (and three when starting!) Three of those goals took us to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy, scoring one of the five against Hyde, and against Droylsden and Solihull, scoring the only goals. He left at the end of 05-06 to join Rossendale, where he will probably score another fifty goals. At nearly a goal every other game, Phil has served Celtic well.
