Steve started out at Bradley FC, before going full time with Huddersfield Town. He played six league games for the first team before being released, and joining Emley for a season, before moving back to full time football with Sheffield United. After his short spell with Sheffield United in 1999, Steve retired from the full time game and rejoined Wakefield Emley in January 2000. He ran the wings for Emley for two seasons before signing for Ashton United in 2003. After a season with the Robins, he was regarded as one of the best players in an Ashton strip, but stopped figuring in Jerry Quinns plans for the Conference North season, and so opted to join Celtic, where he quickly established himself as a fans favourite, and won player of the round in the GLS cup where he and Chris Denham both scored hattricks against Halifax.

Smudge, as he was affectionally known, earned the Managers Player of the year award at the end of the 2004/05 season, but decided that he was not getting enough starts during the 2005/06 season, opting to return to Ashton United. From there, he hopped on to Hyde United, joining a large ex-Celtic contingent. However, after a season away, Steve returned to the Fold, but suffered an horrific injury that left him out of the game for a year, before returning at Christmas 2007, and going to Guiseley to complete his rehabilitation.
