Celtic's run ends
By Deborah Taylor

Celtic ended their run without a win by continuing Whitby’s run of losing home games, and deserved to come away with the points.

Though Whitby had the first chance of the match, with Jacob Day’s shot from outside the box on target, it was Celtic that created the better chances of the first half, Raul Correia forcing Shane Bland into his first stop of the game, berating his defence for giving Correia the space to shoot. They didn’t listen, as moments later, Correia blasted goalwards, the shot deflected wide. Both Celtic fullbacks got forward, both inches away from giving Celtic the lead. It became a case of who would shoot from a corner near the end of the half, with Correia, Theo Bailey-Jones and Nathan Caine all getting close, but eventually Soni Fergus cleared it for the home side.

It continued to be mainly Celtic in the second half, with Whitby unable to break the triumvirate of Dahrius Waldron, Kyle Harrison and Domaine Rouse. At the other end, Correia again wormed his way through the backline, this time pulled down inside the box by Lewis Hawkins. Raul took it himself, dispelling the Marine hoodoo in spectacular style.

With half an hour remaining, the goal kicked Whitby into gear. Once again, it required the Celtic back line to stand firm, though Coleby Shepherd’s effort from twenty yards required Greg Hall to smother it and with ten minutes remaining, Hall pulled off the save of the match, Harry Green’s angled drive palmed by Hall onto the bar, with Waldron hacking the ball away with Whitby lurking for the lose ball. That save earned Celtic the win as much as Correia’s penalty spot conversion.
