Match Report -
Altrincham do it again!
By Iain Benson

Not content with putting five past us on Boxing Day, Altrincham did it again on New Year's Day, with a repeat of the score-line and putting their tally against the Celts into double figures.

It started badly with Jake Moult and Kyle Perry forcing Craig Ellison into two excellent stops before Nicky Clee's speculative effort from distance looked to have been caught by Ellison, only for the ball to squirm between his fingers and nestle in the back of the net. After a free kick around the Altrincham box, the visitors broke quickly, and Damian Reeves's lofted ball to the back post was met by an unmarked Jake Moult to double Altrincham's lead.

Celtic finally got forward and Sean McConville's near post shot was an excellent one, and required quick reactions from Stuart Coburn.

And then it was three for Altrincham when Scott Leather picked up the ball on the wing, advanced through a toothless defence and fired a good shot into the far corner of the goal, Ellison unable to reach it. Ellison did reach Moult's next effort with a good stop, so it was only three-nil at the break.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, with Kyle Perry's distance shot taking a wicked deflection off James Tunnicliffe, and beyond Ellison's reach, and eight minutes later, it was five once again as Nicky Clee found Damian Reeves and he smashed his effort past Ellison.

Celtic did come close to pulling one back for pride when Joel Bembo-Leta's looping header was over Coburn only for Tom Marshall to head clear from under the bar, but Reeves came even closer with a turn and shot from the edge of the box that thudded off the crossbar.

In the last few minutes McConville went close with an angled drive into the side netting, and Lewis Hatch fired wide just before the whistle.

Altrincham have now twice exposed Celtic's frailties this season, and the team will have to be rebuilt ahead of a visit to one of the season's title contenders on Saturday, when we go to Solihull Moors.
