Liam started with the youth team at Nottingham Forest, but on his release in 1983 joined Huddersfield Town, going onto make 21 appearances and 2 goals. After a spell on loan in 1986 with Tranmere Rovers, he joined Bury where he played the bulk of his games making 262 appearances and scoring 89 goals. In 1993 he finally left Bury to join Bristol City for a season with 41 appearances and 4 goals. Three seasons at Burnley between 94 and 97 saw him notch up 63 appearances and 9 goals and then two seasons at Scarborough with 65 appearances and 7 goals. He retired as a professional footballer in 1999 and had brief spells at first Northwich Victoria, then he joined Celtic, before moving onto Stocksbridge Park Steels where he played for two seasons until 2002. FDurther brief spells at Queensbury, Harrogate Railway and Eccleshill United until he finished his career in 2005 with Rossendale United.
