Celtic’s crashed out of the FA Cup with a goal late into the second period of extra time from Joel Davidson.

When two of the three best defences in the league and two of the worst attacks in the league clash, chances were always going to be limited. Raul Correia twice went close for Celtic in the first half, the first rising, but the second forcing a decent stop from Curtis Anderson. Celtic looked lively in the first period, with Lancaster’s only real chance coming from a set-piece, though Bradley Hubbold’s free-kick hardly troubled Greg Hall.

The second period saw the tide turn, though Harry Benns had a great chance early on, the lion’s share fell to Lancaster. Celtic through bodies in the way of one attack, finally getting some reprieve with Kyle Brownhill’s rising shot clearing the bar, but Brownhill’s thirty-yard effort with twenty minutes to go tested Hall, forcing an excellent save. David Norris cut inside and Hall athletically tipped his shot over the bar and caught Andy Teague’s header off the corner easily. With time running out, Correia had the best chance for Celtic to put the game to bed, but fired just the wrong side of the post after Matty Liptrott put him through.

Extra time saw Celtic put on a lot of pressure, but the only chance fell to Correia right before the interval and his shot cleared the bar. The second period of extra time saw Lancaster push. Lancaster’s fourth sub was well-timed. Joel Davidson came on, raced up the field, latched onto David Norris’s spread ball and fired past Greg Hall with virtually his first touch. Celtic had to go for it, but Anderson twice denied Celtic putting the game to penalties, blocking Matty Liptrott’s low shot and Raul Correia’s header off a whipped-in free kick.

Lancaster face a home tie to Bury AFC in the next round, whilst Celtic’s hope of a cup run again falters at the first hurdle.
