On loan at Vauxhall MotorsLiverpool born Scott started out as a trainee at Wigan Athletic before leaving to join Mansfield Town in 1999. There were brief flirts with Carlisle United where he made six minutes of league appearances before joining Doncaster Rovers. Unable to get first team football, he dropped into non-league with Bamber Bridge in 2001, and moved onto play for Droylsden. Lincoln City were in the market for non-league players at the time, and moved in for him. This proved to be a good move, with Scott making 30 appearances and scoring 3 goals for the Imps, becoming a fans favourite. Once again, first team football looked a rarity, and Scott went on loan to Stockport County and Hereford in the 2003/2004 season, before joining Halifax Town in August 2004. He was a regular in the side, but made the surprise switch to Runcorn in February 2005. With the financial problems at the Linnets, Scott switched places just a few days after playing against Celtic for Runcorn in the game where they switched places in the relegation zone.
