Russell was on the books at Bury but was released at the end of the 2005/06 season alongside several other players including former Celt Craig Dootson. He joined Hinckley and made one appearance before going on loan to Ashton United, a deal that was made permanent. He joined temporarily us from our Tameside neighbours.
