Stalybridge Celtic FC has announced a five year agreement with Tameside College to provide football education for school leavers in the borough.

Stalybridge FC Football Academy will provide a progression route in football supported with sports qualification that leads to university, employment and apprenticeships.

Stalybridge Celtic FC was one of the first non-league clubs in the country to develop a football academy. Its twin aims of developing football talent and improving career opportunities has been fulfilled with the development of graduates. Alec Mudimu and Darius Osei are two former Academy players who have progressed into Stalybridge Celtic's first team and the professional ranks of Barnsley FC respectively. In addition to these elite progression outcomes, the remainder have gone on to degree level courses at a diverse range of both regional and national universities to further develop their skills at degree level.

Ian Milligan, chief executive, Stalybridge Celtic FC, said: We are very proud of our Football Academy and the contribution it has made to the development of young people. Players are encouraged to achieve and our progressive ethos ensures that individuals are successful on and off the pitch. Liam Watson, first team manager, is committed to the Academy and takes great care in the development of our players. The relationship with Tameside College provides the convenience of an excellent educational service to the players and families. The Academy will go from strength to strength'.

Academy players will enroll on a full time programme that will combine training, coaching, matches and classroom study. Training and coaching sessions take place at the state of the art Stockport Sports Village in Woodley. Formal studies are timetabled at the club's Bower Fold ground and Academy players will take part in matches scheduled on Wednesday afternoons.

Jackie Moores, principal, Tameside College, said: Tameside College is looking forward to working with a great local club to develop talent and progression opportunities for young people. Together Stalybridge Celtic FC and Tameside College will develop young people and help them progress to the best universities, the best jobs and the best apprenticeships. I would encourage young people with a passion for sport to come down and have a look at the Football Academy at Stalybridge Celtic'.
