Celtic snatch a point at the death
By Deborah Taylor

Celtic struggled to gain a foothold in the second half after going in at the break one up, with Wythenshawe getting ahead in the second, only for Celtic to mug them at the death in Jon Macken's first game in charge.

Liam Tongue started Celtic off inside the first minute, coming agonisingly close to getting the perfect start, but for a stuck out leg from Luke Worth, with Kyle Haslam in the home goals beaten. As the half wore on, Wythenshawe pressed harder and harder The home side spurned a couple of glorious chances Abdullahi Ahmed firing over the bar, and Darrhyl Mason wide. At the other end, Milan Lalkovic gave the home side a warning of what he can do, when he span inside his defender and forced a decent stop. Ten minutes before the interval, Lalkovic overlapped Kyle Brownhill and cut into the box onto the return ball, firing low and hard. Haslam positioned for the shot, but the foot of Luke Worth intercepted the shot, sending it looping up over Haslam and into the net.

Second half saw Wythenshawe up the pressure. Charlie Monks kept Celtic in front with a fine save from Darrhyl Mason, and thought he’d done it again fifteen minutes in when he denied Michael Phenix at close range, but Michael Monaghan latched onto the loose ball and fired it into the net. Tongue almost instantly put Celtic back in front, but lacked the power or accuracy, allowing Haslam to claim easily, before the home side were in front with the Celtic defence absent giving Mason the time and the space to pick his spot and bury the ball. Monks continued to be Celtic’s last line of defence, as Wythenshawe didn’t sit on a one goal lead, hunting for more. Both Edward Brown and Michael Monaghan saw their on-target efforts denied, but for the most part, the Celtic defence kept the shots to a minimum.

And then, with one minute on the clock, Celtic broke at a speed that stunned the home side. Jordan Butterworth produced a beautiful cross, right onto the swinging boot of Joe Duckworth who buried his shot with the net bulging before Haslam could react. And Butterworth could have been lofted aloft as a hero, when in stoppage time, he found the space for a shot, but although he had the accuracy, he lacked the power and Haslam kept a point for his team in a game in which they probably deserved all three.
