Leigh started his career with the Sheffield United youth team, his home town club. Before long he was spotted by a Barnsley scout, and taken on as a back up to the Barnsley number one Dave Watson. He had many games in the Barnsley reserve side during the 2000/01 season, but never made it into the first team squad. With a change of management, Barnsley released Leigh in May 2001. Hull City gave a trial to Leigh for several weeks, playing him in the reserve squad, where he impressed. However, Hull decided that Leigh was not going to be required, and Emley stepped in to capture his signature when Emley's number one, Paul Cuss, received an horrific back injury during a game with Bishop Auckland in November 2001. Leigh was keen to move back up the league ladder, and joined Celtic after the departure of Jason Batty back to New Zealand. After leaving Celtic he went to Scarborough and played against Chelsea in the FA cup, he got a signed shirt, but his mum washed it!
