A lacklustre start to the second half made the win harder than it should have been, but having dominated the first half, Celtic deserved the win.

Pressure from Celtic started from the first whistle, Jack Irlam pressuring Lower Breck keeper, Alex Brown into almost slicing the ball into his own net from an early corner. However, from the resulting corner, Lower Breck were in disarray, Charlie Doyle bringing the half-cleared corner back and looping in a great cross. Kyle Brownhill, who moments before had been on the halfway line, arrived just in time to turn the cross in at the bottom corner. Just over a minute later, and Liam Tongue made it two. Andy Scarisbrick pulled the ball back for Tongue at his favoured distance, he blasted the ball into the bottom corner, Brown unable to keep it out. Brown had his work cut out for the rest of the half, denying a close-range effort from Obua Mugalula, and ten minutes later doing the same to Irlam. From that corner, Fortune Maphosa got the ball at his feet and tried to prod it over the line, but Brown got down well to deny him. Mugalula danced his way past the Breck back line, drew the keeper, and fired across the face, missing by inches.

The second half started with the Celtic backline asleep. After Brown bravely took the ball at Irlam’s feet, he launched it and Maphosa let Luke Gill get across him to get one-on-one with Charlie Monks, who got his hands on the shot, but couldn’t keep it out. Two minutes later and Breck were all square. This time a launched free kick from an offside again found Gill, this time getting the better of Josh Granite, and again Monks got both hands on the ball, but it went in anyway. The rest of the half could have swung either way, with Celtic getting their game back in gear, Tongue twice forcing stops from Brown, the first a comfortable one from a free kick driven low along the ground. The second saw a curling shot from twenty yards that Brown plucked from the air with Irlam arriving. At the other end, William Edmondson’s first touch after coming on, set up by a clever back heel from former Celt Bohan Dixon, cleared the bar by a fraction.

The last quarter of an hour saw Celtic switch formations, and Lower Breck had no answer. A superb volley from Jack Irlam, denied by a stunning save, and Lewis Rawsthorn showed great pace to get into position, but a stuck-out leg from Millington diverted it wide with Brown beaten. Penalties loomed. Four minutes of stoppages, and in the third of them, Celtic won a corner thanks to Ruben Jerome’s presence of mind. Scarisbrick lifted the ball back to Tongue, who fired in low through the crowd to the far post. Joe Williams blocked, the ball coming back to Tongue, and he struck low and hard towards the near post this time. Unsighted, the first Brown new was Tongue wheeling away to celebrate.

No time left for a comeback, and Celtic burst through into the next round.
