Match Preview :- Workington - Saturday August 30th, 2025 (15:00:00)

On Saturday, Celtic are back in FA Cup action with an away trip to Workington. Workington are currently bottom of the Northern Premier League on one point after six games. Kick off 3pm.

Widnes have withdrawn from the league, meaning one less team to go down this season, even so, with one point after six games, Workington need to change their fortunes, or be one of the three. Workington’s only point this season came from a home match against Ashton United, which they drew 1-1, this also gave them half of their goals scored, when Steven Rigg scored right on half time. Their other goal was scored by Luke Ellis on the opening day of the season, when they lost 2-1 at home to Whitby. They hold the current league record for the highest away loss, losing away at Stockton 6-0. They’ve played three home games, so far, scored two and conceded four.

It's been a while since our last meeting with Workington, six years. We met three times in the 18/19 season, winning both league matches, 1-0 at home (Neil Kengni) and 2-1 away (Andy Scott with both). Workington’s revenge was knocking us out of the FA Trophy, winning 2-1 at Bower Fold. The year before, we beat them 4-3 in Workington, but in the run in at the end of the season, we were playing three or four games a week, and Workington beat us 3-1 on a wet Wednesday in April. The last time Workington beat us at their place was 2013, when they won 1-0. In the last five visits, Workington have won two, and Celtic have won three. Over the last ten, it’s even, with both teams having won five.

Workington’s last match was a 2-0 away defeat at the hands of Lancaster. In that match, Workington lined up as:
1. Alex Mitchell
2. Charlie Barnes
3. Hayden Atkinson
4. Ceiron Casson
5. Jack Dickinson
6. Jordan Little
7. David Symington
8. Luke Ellis
9. Steven Rigg
10. Kai Nugent
11. Sharif Deans

In Celtic’s last match, the 2-0 away win over Bury, Celtic lined up as:
1. Charlie Monks
2. Jordan Butterworth
3. Kyle Brownhill
4. Charlie Doyle
5. Jack Byrne
6. Jack Tinning
7. Brandon Newell
8. Liam Tongue
9. Ruben Jerome
10. Jack Irlam
11. Andy Scarisbrick

Andy Scarisbrick is available for the match, despite the dubious red against Bury. Although Workington are the league above, they are rock bottom and struggling, so this is a great chance for Celtic to advance in the FA Cup. As one pundit put it, if you’re going to draw a team from a higher league, Workington are the team to get. There will not be a match centre for this game, but you can still follow along on X.
