On Tuesday night (kick off 7:45pm), Celtic host Vauxhall Motors in the Cheshire Senior Cup. Vauxhall are currently top of the Northwest Counties League First Division South, two leagues below Celtic. There is reduced entry for this match, with adults at £7 and concessions at £4 with kids free.
Vauxhall are currently flying the NWCL, looking odds on for a promotion to the Premier Division. They have played three fewer games than their nearest rivals, Oswestry Town, they are four points clear and fifteen points clear of sixth spot. So far this season, they have won nineteen of their matches, drawn once and lost twice. Those two losses have come in their last six matches, losing away to Barnton and at home Ellesmere Rangers and drawing at home to Eccleshall. They're out of all their cup competitions now except the Cheshire Senior Cup, beating Barnton 5-0 away in the last round. Their most recent loss was at home to Hebburn in the Vase.
Their top scorer this season is Karl Noon with ten in the league and fifteen in all competitions. Across all competitions, Michael Burkey and Ryan Cox with twelve goals are pushing the veteran for the golden boot. In total, in the league, they have scored sixty-three goals whilst conceding twenty-three giving them the second best attack and second best defence in the league, only Oswestry scoring more and Wythenshaw conceding fewer.
We've not met Vauxhall since their voluntary resignation from the league in 2014, but since 2000 we've met a fair few times. Their last visit here was in 2013 in the FA Trophy when Celtic own 3-0 (with goals from Adam Pepper, Kristian Platt and Tom Buckley), adding to the 3-1 at their place (with goals from Matt Regan, Kristian Platt and Ryan Croasdale) and the 3-2 at Bower Fold in the league (Conal Platt, Callum Warburton and Obi Anoruo giving Celtic a comfortable win). We've met at Bower Fold in the Cheshire Senior Cup twice, both times Vauxhall have won, the last time a 3-2 reversal in 2007 (with both of Celtic's goals from Ashley Winn not enough to stop that year's league golden boot winner, Paul Taylor who scored a hat-trick). Their last win here was in 2012 when they beat us 1-0 in the league. In their last seventeen visits (since 2000), Celtic have won ten, drawn two and lost five.
Vauxhall's last match was last night, the night before playing us, when they came from behind to beat Stockport Town 3-2 after Stockport were reduced to nine (including former Celtic keeper, now Stockport custodian, Josh Ollerenshaw seeing red for bringing down another former Celt, Glenn Rule). In that match they lined up as:
1. Ryan Crump
2. Kynan Mason
3. Greg Drummond
4. Gardner
5. Tom Mitchell
6. Joe Heath
7. Joe Brandon
8. Glenn Rule
9. Ben Holmes
10. Haydn Cooper
11. Michael Burkey
